Rum Ball

What better way to start a new year than with a sweet. Thought to prepare something unique, easy and light on the stomache. Moreover, didn’t want to spend lot of time in the kitchen. My obvious choice was the “Rum Balls” as I missed to prepare them for Christmas. These look very appetising and tempting too. These cute balls are called rum balls as rum is added to it to give it a distinct taste. If you are averse to alchohol, you may avoid using rum.

This sweet was an instant hit with my husband’s collegues in office. Even my friends liked it, but no one could guess what were the ingredients used. Some thought it had an elaborate process to prepare them but they were shocked to hear that it didnot reaquire any gas.

Ingredients :

Digestive biscuits – 500gms (I used marie biscuits)

Condensed milk – 1 tin

Nutmeg powder – ½ tsp

Cardamom powder – ½ tsp

Cocoa powder – 4 levelled

Butter – 20 gms

Desiccated coconut – 5 tbsp

Rum – 5 tbsp

Procedure :

Firstly, sprinkle desiccated coconut on a plate and keep it aside.

Break the digestive biscuits in large pieces, put in the mixie and make nice powder of them.

Transfer the nicely powdered bisucits to a mixing bowl.

Add the nutmeg, cardamom and cocoa powders to the biscuit powder and mix well with hand. Do not add too much of cocoa as these could turn out to be bitter.

Then add the butter and mix well again

Lastly add the condensed milk little by little to it and knead well. Check sweetness in between while adding condensed milk.

While kneading, smear butter from time to time to avoid the mixture sticking to your palms.

Take little of the mixture and shape into small round balls. Take care, as the mixture tends to be very soft initially.

Place these balls on the plate sprinkled with desiccated coconut and roll these balls on the desiccated coconut. This should be done quickly before it gets dry.

Keep these balls for about an hour to let them harden

Delicious rum balls are ready to be eat.
